An unfolding journey

As we learn from our culture and heritage to understand resources, communities and practices, and plan for a better future…

Our urban systems and businesses are interwoven with physical and digital infrastructures. Design thinking has become an essential part of modern services as we manage historical centres and cultural initiatives, combine manufacturing with design with technology, and steer city development and cross-cultural collaboration. The impact of this new layer in our cities is evident in almost every sector of the contemporary city. This exhibition displays works and projects from designers, entrepreneurs, cultural trailblazers, policy makers, and activists from four Greater Bay Area cities, Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, who visualise, present and connect new perspectives on our urban environment and society.

MESSAGE FROM FREEMAN LAU, SECRETARY GENERAL OF HONG KONG FEDERATION OF DESIGN ASSOCIATIONS

Ever since the reform and opening up of China in 1978, the cooperation and communication among Hong Kong, Macao and the Pearl River Delta has continuously broadened and deepened. Being a world-class city cluster covering Hong Kong, Macao and the nine Pearl River Delta municipalities, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area not only brings enormous opportunities, but also echoes the country’s Belt and Road Initiative. The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area promulgated by the Chinese Central Government in February 2019 aims to accelerate the development by fostering closer cooperation, fully leverage the cities’ unique advantages and foster complementarity among them. With the inherent international position and connection network, Hong Kong has an important role to play in leading the Greater Bay Area towards the international.

The cultural and creative industries facilitate Hong Kong to become a high value added and diversified economic system. With the advantages of the geographical proximity and cultural kinship with other cities in the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong designers, with their international perspective and creative cogitation, are equipped with great development potentials which enable them to promote vibrant growth of cultural and creative industries of the entire Greater Bay Area. The Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on Supporting the Building of Shenzhen into the Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, published in August 2019, encourage Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao to jointly hold cultural and artistic activities to strengthen the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation in digital and creative industries, promote the integrated development of culture and tourism, and enrich the substance of the Chinese and foreign cultural exchange.

The Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations (FHKDA) has strived to promote the exchange between the design industries in Hong Kong and the Mainland since 2005. In recent years, FHKDA organized or participated in several large exhibitions, including the 2nd HK-SZ Design Biennale in 2016, the 20…..43 Business of Hong Kong Design in 2018 and the Chengdu Creativity & Design Week 2018 – Hong Kong Pavilion: Viable City Shaping etc., and demonstrated how design has as a soft power promoted the creativity, economy and cultural heritage of a city.

In 2019, Create Hong Kong of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region sponsors FHKDA to host an exhibition series titled FLOW Unfold touring around Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macao and Zhuhai which presents over 30 different projects inspired by showcases happened in the four cities. The “creative window” constituted by these four Greater Bay Area cities, has become the starting point located at the southern region of the Greater Bay Area to enter into the entire Greater Bay Area, which allows everyone to experience the cities’ cultural and creative climate, by penetrating into the window, from exploring to examining, and promotes the development of the design industry of the Greater Bay Area. It is hoped that this exhibition as a review and prospect can forge the mutual understanding and strengthen the cooperation among the citizens, enterprises and talents in the Mainland and Hong Kong, so that we can all contribute towards the future development of the Greater Bay Area and construct its creative culture and industries.
